12:30p - reach the surface and breathe
all my life, i've had an affinity for fantasy. fairy tales and dragons, imaginary worlds and portals to vastly different existences, otherworldly powers and abilities, wizards, witches, strange creatures, royalty and villainy. so i suppose, given my predilection for imagination, it was only natural that i eventually evolve into what i once hated most: a gamer.
i had two ex-boyfriends who were gamers, who tried to teach me the ways of the gamer geek. of course, they failed miserably - they couldn't even get me to agree to learn. of sure, i looked at the cards and admired the art, but that was that. i had always said, "if i ever succumb and agree to play that wretched game, it'll have to be Vampire or nothing." two gamer exes, and it takes my best friend to get me to quit resisting the Geek Side.
so on his birthday, quinnzap got himself the 8th Edition Core Game Set because i promised that i'd let him teach me to play. so most of this week, i read the rulebook, and last night, after a sumptuous dinner of pink salmon with lemon butter sauce, i played my first game of Magic.
so I started with the Sky Slam deck. throughout the game quinnzap would explain to me how various cards worked and how game play commenced, how you shaved points off your opponent's life, how artifacts and sorceries could be used to block damage or a spell. he either taught me really well, or i have fantastic beginner's luck, because even if i was showing my cards to figure out how they worked, i still won! *gloat gloat*
then we switched, so i used the Heavy Hitters Deck. rather unwieldy - those creatures are costly on mana, i think. but look! i won again! *gloat gloat* but i think quinnzap had fun, (and i won) so that's all that matters.
oh, and i won. =D
i'm giving in to the Geek Side, and it feels pretty good.
PS: all this while another geek activity was taking place on the other side of the table: oneal was putting together his LEGO Mindstorms Dark Side Developer Kit, and Paul was at his PC, playing Alpha Centauri. 56 Yale has truly epitomized Geek Central. haha!
